What are Emergency Allotment benefits?
Emergency Allotment benefits are emergency food assistance benefits that are disbursed to SNAP recipients to help address temporary food needs. Emergency Allotment benefits were implemented to help provide immediate relief to households struggling to meet their nutritional needs during the COVID-19 pandemic.
EA benefits are part of the Pandemic Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, also known as P-SNAP.
What is P-SNAP?
P-SNAP provides emergency allotment benefits to households based on their size. Pandemic SNAP has helped households with children missing school meals, people who have lost their job, and individuals facing food insecurity by delivering emergency assistance EA benefits during the pandemic.
The USDA has granted each state permission to use these temporary flexibilities in the food stamps program to provide additional assistance to low-income households.

Who qualifies for extra North Carolina SNAP benefits?
Any household that is currently receiving SNAP benefits qualifies for extra food stamp Emergency Allotment (EA) benefits.

According to the USDA, The extra food stamps you will receive are the difference between the SNAP household’s maximum benefit for the household size.
However, all households receive extra food stamps of at least $95.
Also, those households currently receiving $95 or more will continue to receive that same amount. There will be no change in extra benefits for these households.
Additionally, those households receiving the maximum base SNAP benefit for their household size at the current temporary level of 115 percent will receive extra benefits of $95 per month.
Lastly, those households with a calculated extra food stamps benefit amount less than $95 will receive extra benefits totaling $95 per month.

North Carolina Food Stamps Increase in October 2022
Here’s some more great news for North Carolina SNAP recipients.
Last month, the USDA announced that on October 1st, food stamp benefits will be increasing by 12.5%.
This is an effort to mitigate the rising prices of food and grocery items due to inflation.
Inflation has had a significant impact on low income families that rely on monthly food assistance.
In fact, the average cost of groceries has risen 12.2 percent in the last 12 months. That’s the largest 12-month increase since April 1979.

You cannot use your SNAP EBT benefits to pay for shipping.
Therefore, if the grocery store charges a shipping fee for an online purchase, you will have to pay for that with a personal debit or credit card.
Additionally, you can avoid a delivery fee by opting for curbside pickup.
In fact, most grocery stores that accept EBT online offer curbside pickup, including Walmart.
Amazon is currently offering free delivery for orders over $35.
